The Office for Research

Western Health now has its own Low Risk Human Research Ethics Review Panel.
As per the National Health and Medical Research Council's National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007), institutions may choose to establish their own processes for ethical review and approval for low risk research.

Institutional Approval of Research:
Please note that all research that is to be carried out at Western Health (with few exceptions), requires institutional approval to be attained before research commences. The following two forms have been formulated to help attain institutional approval in an efficient manner:

The Western Health Office for Research oversees and co-ordinates research activities within Western Health. It has two main roles:
           1. Facilitation of research.
           2. Research governance.

Our researchers and research teams have highly effective relationships, both formal and informal, with academic and clinical institutions throughout the world as well as with industry. The variety and breadth of these relationships enable Western Health to have a world-class reputation for innovative clinical research as well as basic science research.

Aims
The aims of the Office for Research are to:

  • Provide leadership and support for the conduct of clinical and non-clinical research of the highest quality;
  • Administer a system for research governance that ensures accountability, transparency and the highest ethical and legal standards;
  • Assist with the administration of research activities;
  • Provide advice, assistance and encouragement to all staff wishing to pursue research activities; and
  • Promote Western Health's research achievements to staff and the community.

All queries for ethical approval should be directed to The Melbourne Health Office for Research who will be able to conduct ethical approval on behalf of Western Health for all Single and Multi-site projects.

Please note the proceedings of the Western Health Low Risk Human Research Ethics Panel have been temporarily suspended.
