Starting Out as a Graduate Nurse in Melbourne?

How do I apply?
Graduates from New Zealand & Interstate apply via the same process as Victorian graduates.

How am I interviewed for a position?
Western Health will interview you by phone at a time convenient to you. It does not take very long and gives you an opportunity to ask all the questions you may have about the program or the move to Melbourne.

How do I orientate myself to Melbourne?
When you arrive we will provide you with a complete orientation package to Melbourne, the local area and the hospital. With in this all of your questions will be answered. Everything from "How to find a house" to "How to get the gas connected". Our Graduates from New Zealand have added to this over the years so that nothing is left out - it will even tell you where to go for a drink!

How do I get my Nursing Registration in Melbourne?
Getting registered to practise in Melbourne is really very easy. When you are registered at home you will be provided with your Nursing Registration and your Annual Practicing Certificate. You simply need to bring these with you to Melbourne and drop into the Nurse's Board here and they will do the rest. It's called mutual recognition and to find out more check out the Board's website at  www.nbv.org.au

My training at home is different will this make my transition more difficult?
We are often asked this question. In short the answer is NO! Western Health's Graduate Orientation process takes into account that many of our Graduates have studied in many different locations. Our Skills Workshops in your first week as a Graduate will provide you with education, practise and support to ensure you feel comfortable in working with us and to become familiar with our common practices and procedures. You will always have support on the wards and from your graduate educator if you are ever uncertain.

Is there anywhere else I can go for information about making the move to Melbourne?
You can always ring the Graduate Nurse Coordinator if you have any questions about your particular situation or making the move over to Western Health for your Graduate Year.
