GP Liaison 

The Role of the GP Liaison Unit

The General Practice Liaison Unit is responsible for delivering activities outlined in the GP Strategy to support and strengthen
the interface between Western Health and general
practitioners. Some of these activities include:

  • The Western Health Service Directory
  • A Guide to Services for GPs
  • The redevelopment of the Western Health discharge summary
  • The new Outpatient Referral form that can be loaded
    on to Medical Director
  • Faxed and electronic notifications to GPs
  • The GP Training model, in conjunction with the VMA,
    to recruit and retain GPs to the western metropolitan area
  • Hospital medical officer education on general practice
  • Advice to health service staff on issues relating to
    general practice
  • GP Clinical attachments at Western Health
  • Regular newsletters
  • Yearly GP Grand RoundThe General Practice Unit facilitates regular communication between Western Health and the Divisions of General Practice through regular Western Health and GP Partners meetings and through developing relationships with key stakeholders
  • An annual cricket match between local GPs and Western Health staff.

The Western Health GP Strategy

The Western Health GP Strategy has been developed to
strengthen communication, relationships and systems
between Western Health and General Practitioners to improve continuity of patient care and enhance patient outcomes.The
Strategy has been developed with input from local GPs, the
Divisions of General Practice, the Department of Human
Services, the Commonwealth Department of Health and
Ageing and the AMA.The GP Strategy and GP Liaison program
is funded by the Department of Human Services.
 

Western Health's General Practice Liaison Unit

Dr Stephen Lew has been Western Health's General
Practice Liaison Officer since August 2003. As well as
practising in a general practice in Pascoe Vale, Stephen
provides advice to Western Health on general practice
matters and is also available to advise general practitioners
about Western Health services, including communication,
access or difficulties using the health service.

Madeleine Whinney is Western Health's General Practice
Liaison Coordinator. Madeleine holds a combined degree in
Nursing and Health Promotion and was employed in a
number of roles at the Inner Eastern Melbourne Division of
General Practice before moving to Western Health. Prior to
this Madeleine worked in a range of nursing roles including outpatients, and medical and surgical wards. Madeleine also
worked as a receptionist at a large general practice when she
was a student.

Working collaboratively with GP stakeholders across the
region and across all Western Health services, Madeleine is
responsible for the ongoing development and delivery of the
Western Health GP Strategy.
