The Western Health General Practice Liaison Unit (GPLU) is committed to supporting education for general practice and is involved in several GP education programs including continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities.

CPD opportunities

HARP education series

Western Health's General Practice Liaison Unit and HARP program partner with PivotWest to deliver a series of education sessions for GPs on several chronic disease topics.

These education sessions attract RACGP QA&CPD points and are held at the Western Hospital Footscray campus. A full schedule of HARP education sessions for 2010 will be available soon. To register please contact PivotWest on 9689 4566 or click here.

Grand rounds

GPs are welcome to attend the Western Hospital Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. These are held each Friday morning and begin with a light breakfast at 7.45am, with the formal session beginning at 8.00am in the Auditorium at Western Hospital Footscray.

The GPLU will be organising the Grand Round on 3 September 2010. Details will be circulated closer to the date via the General Practice Liaison Unit newsletter and through divisions of general practice

Prevocational General Practice Placement Program (PGPPP)

Western Health also offers a prevocational GP term for junior doctors undertaking hospital training who have not yet enrolled in a speciality and would like to have a 'taste' of general practice before committing to vocational training in any speciality. Currently, Western Health has a placement in Wodonga in collaboration with Bogong Regional Training Network.

Training to become a GP

Western Health works closely with the local general practice training provider Victorian Metropolitan Alliance (VMA), to promote general practice as a career to interns and junior doctors and to support GP registrars undertaking hospital based training within Western Health.

Recruitment and Retention Program for GPs in Melbourne's West

VMA in partnership with Western Health have set up a pilot program designed to retain GP Registrars who undertake their training in Melbourne's West.
