The Special Care Nursery at Sunshine Hospital is a 15 bed high dependency level 2 unit with approximately 600 - 650 neonatal admissions per year.

Infants are admitted to the nursery from Maternity, the Emergency Department, via transfer from other hospitals and we have some who are admitted for surgery.

Various levels of care are provided including:

• Advanced resuscitation and stabilisation of babies with a birth weight greater than 1000 grams and/or 32 weeks gestation
• Usw of CPCP for respiratory distress
• Establishment of oral feeding in premature infants
• Phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
• Intravenous antibiotic therapy
• Comfort Care for Families program
• Hospital in the Home program

Education is also provided to Nursing Students, Graduate Nurses and Graduate Midwives.
