Women's and Children's Services offers an extensive education program to the multi-disciplinary team to ensure professional development is achieved.
The divisional short course program consists of:
- Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) education workshops - full day and update courses.
- Breastfeeding Education workshops to meet Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation standards
- Baby check courses
- Neonatal resuscitation programs
- Managing foetal loss
- Daily in-service education sessions to meet identified needs.
The Graduate Midwife Program / Combined Graduate Nurse / Midwife Program encourages all graduates to participate in the divisional short course programs. This is achieved by including eight study days per year into the program. The Graduate Retreat held at the beginning of their year is held to teach graduates communication and problem solving skills. This includes the planning of a project of their choice.
The Graduates are also supported by monthly in-service and time-out sessions where they have the opportunity to debrief and participate in individual education sessions to meet their needs.
Western Health also offers a broad range of educational programs to support and broaden staff's knowledge and skills, which equips Midwives to offer a woman centred approach for those choosing to give birth at Sunshine Hospital.
