Children's Ward

Children's ward has 24 beds catering for both emergency and elective admissions.  The age of the patients is between 4 weeks and 18 years.

The ward has elective surgery in the following disciplines:

  • Ear, Nose and Throat
  • Orthopaedics
  • Plastic Surgery
  • General Paediatric Surgery
  • Paediatric Urology

The Children's ward has approximately 6,700 admissions per year.

Parent's are encouraged to participate in their child's care and may stay with their child overnight if desired. Visiting hours for the ward are from 9am to 9pm. Parents have access 24hours per day.

Sleep / Settling Centre

The Sleep/Settling Centre is located within the Children's Ward and caters for babies from the age of 0 to 12 months of age and provides parents with sleep and settlinkg techniques that are appropriate for the age of the baby.  The centre offers a day program and also an overnight stay program for parents and their baby.

The Day Program consists of a 4 hour program that is run on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm, and provides hands on experience for parents to learn settling techniques to use in their own home.

The overnight program runs on alternate Wednesday and Saturday nights as well as Thursday and Friday nights and provides parental support and techniques to deal with problems that they may be experiencing with their baby overnight.

The program accepts clients by:

  • Self referral
  • Maternal and Child Health Nurses referral
  • GP referral

Early Parenting Program

The Early Parenting Program in collaboration with Tweddle is located at the Williamstown Hospital and conducts day programs on Monday and Thursday.


Nursing staff work with each family in the:

  • Setting achievable goals
  • Development of an individual care plan
  • Provision of one to one and group education and support through discussion, self directed learning, counselling, coaching, modelling, demonstration and information provision
  • Review of the goals at the end of the day with referral to or linkage to specialist or community services as required for ongoing support or management

The promotion of a preventative, early identification and intervention approach to assist families to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence in parenting.

Nursing staff respect and acknowledge cultrual differences in relation to parenting their child.

The Early Parenting Program is currently situated in temporary premises on the first floor in Upper West Ward. The program is run jointly with staff provided by Tweddle Footscray and Sunshine Hospital. The staff consist of Maternal and Child Health Nurses and Early Childhood Care Professionals.
