The Thoracic surgery is the repair of organs located in the thorax, or chest. The thoracic cavity lies between the neck and the diaphragm, and contains the heart and lungs (cardiopulmonary system), the oesophagus, trachea, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm.
Western Health provides a Thoracic Surgery service in conjunction with specialists at from the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Department provides consultative and operative services on an elective and emergency basis for patients requiring advanced cardiac, and thoracic surgical care.
Operative procedures undertaken include:
· Coronary bypass surgery, including total arterial grafting and off-pump surgery
· Cardiac valve repair and replacement
· Reconstruction and replacement of the thoracic aorta, including the arch
· Electrophysiology surgery for life-threatening arrhythmias
· Correction of congenital cardiac abnormalities in adults
Thoracic Surgery encompasses exploratory and diagnostic procedures, many through minimally invasive techniques. These include:
· Lung and oesophageal tumours
· Management of thoracic trauma
