Outpatients

Outpatient Achievements for 2006/2007

  • Development of a lead nurse role for each Outpatient Clinic, in order to provide expert nursing support to each clinic. The Lead Nurse will offer direct support to the clinical unit in managing the clinic demands and provide a contact point for clinicians and patients.
  • The OPD has been working closely with the Neurosurgery Unit and the Department of Human services through the 'Patient Flow Collaborative' to develop and test strategies to address issues identified as impeding the flow of patients through the outpatients setting, as well as improving the outpatients experience for patients and staff.
  • Greater control mechanisms have been implemented in order to reduce the level of overbooking to the Outpatients clinics in order to better manage patient demands within the available resources of the clinics. Over time, this will reduce the wait times in clinics and improve the outpatient experience for patients and clinical staff.
  • In collaboration with clinical units, the OPD has begun the development of referral and discharge guidelines for specialty units.
  • The Outpatients department at Western Hospital has been extremely lucky to be supported by the generosity of tattersall who have provided funding to purchase new patient seating for the Outpatients Department. Some of this seating has already arrived such as recliners for our oncology patients and supportive seating for our bariatric patients. The remainder of the seating is due to arrive in late August. This will greatly improve the atmosphere and comfort for our patients.
