Description of the position(s):


  • First Year Registrar:
    · Responsible for Inpatients (Ward Rounds)
    · Outpatients
    · Referrals
    · Endoscopy training (gastroscopy and colonoscopy)
    · Direct supervision of resident
    · Hepato-biliary referrals
    · Responsible for Unit meetings and Audit meetings (Pathology and Radiology)


  • Senior Registrar/Fellow:
    · Endoscopy (including interventional endoscopy)
    · Referrals
    · Research project
    · Clinical research co-investigator
    · Ward Rounds
    · Liaison with other units (Surgery/Oncology etc)


  • Clinical training
    · Inpatient numbers/range of conditions Generally 10-15 inpatients
    · OutPatient clinics General gastroenterology; hepatitis
    · Referrals Shared between registrars
    · Endoscopy Performed across two campuses (Footscray and Sunshine) 5 supervised teaching lists per week shared between Registrars. Interventional lists are optional for Registrars that want further training.


  • Who is the position most suited to?
    An excellent first year position with great exposure to general endoscopy, general gastroenterology and some tertiary/quaternary referral activities and the senior position is best suited to a senior registrar (second year and above).


  • Strengths of the position(s)
    Good exposure to general gastroenterology from a large catchment area and subsequently significant pathology
    Broad interests of gastroenterology subspecialties are represented, including
    o Hepatology (Alcoholic Liver Disease and Viral Hepatitis)
    o General Gastroenterology
    o Gastrointestinal Oncology
    o Endoscopy (including EUS and PillCam)
    o Hepato-Biliary Gastroenterology
    · There is a very collaborative relationship with surgical and oncology teams.
    · Enough endoscopy lists and appropriate expertise to ensure excellent endoscopy training. This includes significant exposure to H&M patients and interventional endoscopy.
    · Possibility to continue into a research role as Fellow in Gastroenterology in particular areas of research (see below).

    Weaknesses
    Although good general gastroenterology and some interest in IBD (Steven Kolt, Jacinta Tobin, Peter Tagkalidis and Alex Boussioutas) there is no current IBD research. This is planned to change with the employment of an IBD physician that will drive clinical research in 2008.

    On call/recall responsibilities
    No Registrar on call for gastroenterology
    There is weekend cover for general medicine

    Opportunities for research
    Opportunity for Fellow in Gastroenterology for laboratory-based research in upper gastrointestinal cancer (Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer). Also translational research in endoscopic screening and surveillance of Barretts and gastric intestinal metaplasia coupled to molecular research in these areas.
    Dr Boussioutas is a Senior Lecturer in the Dept. of Medicine and has active research laboratories at Western Health and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
    All Registrars are encouraged to conduct research during their time in Gastroenterology.
