Vision
Western Health aims to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by providing culturally appropriate health services from prenatal to aged care.
In 2006 Western Health employed an Aboriginal Policy and Planning Officer. Since this time Western Health has continued to build partnerships with local Aboriginal Community controlled organisations and has developed a framework that will guide the organisation to improve the care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The three main priorities for WH over the next two years are;
- Increased cultural awareness of the organisation,
- Employment of Aboriginal people across the service, and
- Better patient identification.
Since the framework was developed WH has commenced delivering cultural awareness training to staff, partnered with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to assist with the development of an Aboriginal Employment Strategy and has improved identification of Aboriginal patients accessing the service.
Better identification of patients allows us to plan and develop service improvements that will assist our staff to provide the best possible care for our patients.
