In 1994 the Western Health Breast Service was established as a small clinic seeing an average of five women a week. Today Western Health offers a best practice multidisciplinary breast service for nearly 100 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year, as well as supporting those women with a breast symptom who are diagnosed with a benign condition.
Women have access to:
- A comprehensive multidisciplinary service through a multidisciplinary clinic and regular multidisciplinary case conferencing
- Best practice surgical and reconstructive techniques are offered, including sentinel node biopsy, and immediate breast reconstruction
- A range of information resources in English and community languages
- High quality breast care nurse service and access to psychosocial programs.
- Access to a number of national and international clinical trials.
As well as strengthening its services for all women, the Breast Service has played particular attention to responding to the needs of young women with breast cancer, women with advanced breast cancer and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
