Indicators for Referral

Neonatal Risk Factors:

  • Family history of congenital hearing loss
  • Infections such as Rubella or CMV during pregnancy
  • Birth asphyxia
  • Birthweight below 1500 grams
  • Severe jaundice (requiring an exchange transfusion or
    a bilirubin level greater than 400 micromols per litre)
  • Congenital abnormalities of the head and neck

 

General:

  • Inconsistent or lack of responses to sounds (voice
    and others)
  • Speech or language delay
  • Developmental delay
  • Family history of congenital hearing loss
  • Ongoing or severe middle ear problems
  • Learning difficulties
  • Behaviour problems
  • Measles/mumps/meningitis
  • Head injury, skull fractures
  • Parental concern
