ADDICTION MEDICINE
"Addiction Medicine" is an internationally accepted term that describes the area of Medicine specially concerned with harms generally related to the non-medical (eg. Illicit) use of drugs; this involves the acute management of drug related problems (eg. Provision of detoxification; managing drug withdrawal and its' potential complications etc), participation in multidisciplinary team approaches to drug rehabilitation along with primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of drug related problems. Most patients who have Addictive Disease commonly have important co-morbidities eg. Major medical and/or psychiatric illnesses; some also have significant medico-legal/forensic issues (eg. Illicit drugs; cognitive impairment and questionable competence; the issue of "compulsory" treatment; intoxication and driving etc), hence the essential need for Addiction Medicine to have an integrated, bio-psycho-social approach towards patient management.
