Frequently Asked Questions about Western Health's Capital Redevelopment

What suburbs are in Western Health's catchment?
The Western Health catchment extends from the inner suburbs of Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley to outer urban areas such as Melton and Sunbury. Approximately 738,000 people live in Western Health's catchment area.

Why is Western Health being redeveloped?
Population growth forecasts in the West are far greater than state and national averages. It is expected that over 920,000 people will live in the western suburbs within a decade, and our population is expected to exceed one million by 2026. This means that Western Health must plan ahead to ensure that residents will receive the best care possible in the future.

What major projects are currently underway?

  • TTR West- A teaching, training and research centre located at Sunshine Hospital
  • Radiotherapy Facility- Located at Sunshine Hospital, the facility will be the first public provider of radiotherapy services in the West
  • Sunbury Day Hospital- a brand new hospital providing a range of services for Sunbury residents
  • Other projects include the refurbishment of the Emergency Department and Operating Theatre expansions at Sunshine Hospital.

Who is funding the redevelopment?
The redevelopments, worth over $250 million, are largely funded by the Victorian Government. The Federal Government, University of Melbourne and Victoria University have made contributions to the construction of TTR West.

How will the West benefit from the redevelopment?
By making long term capital plans, Western Health will be able to provide the best care possible for the growing number of people living in the West. New developments, such as the radiotherapy facility and TTR West, will provide services and opportunities that have never existed before for people in Melbourne's western suburbs.

Will patient care be affected during the redevelopment?
Every effort will be made to minimise the impact on patients and their carers, however some changes to services could occur during construction. Every effort will be made to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
