1. Paediatric Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Sunshine Hospital is offering 3, 6 or 12 month Paediatric Emergency Medicine Registrar positions in 2009.
These posts are accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
The positions will suit emergency medicine trainees, paediatric trainees pursuing a specialist career in paediatric emergency medicine or intending to practice where they will be required to provide emergency care for children. The RACP is now mandating that trainees in General Paediatrics complete 6 months of Acute Paediatrics during Advanced Training. This position would satisfy those requirements. Job Sharing is possible if required.
Sunshine Hospital Emergency sees over 60,000 patients per year of which ~ 40% are under 17 years of age.
Notable features of the department and position include:
- Paediatric Emergency Physician on-site 5 days per week
- Consultant Emergency Physician coverage 16 hours per day
- Assistance / supervision of Junior Residents seconded from Royal Children's Hospital and from Western Hospital is an important role of the position
- Protected non-clinical time and involvement in administration, education and/or research is encouraged
- Paediatric campus of the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Medicine Research
- Founding and active member of PREDICT (the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative)
- Active teaching and research programs in place with expectation of contributions by the successful applicant(s)
- Wide variety of paediatric illness and injury with need for autonomous decision making related to medical and surgical problems. The need for transfer and liaise with PETS, NETS and Tertiary centres is frequently required.

Roster does not include nights - evenings to 2300 and weekends will be included
- Educational opportunities with recognized accreditation course in procedural sedation and instructing on our one day PLS course for those with 3-day APLS course certification.

2. Community Child Health
This position is for Trainees interested in furthering their training in community child health.
Interested applicants will be undertaking advanced training either under the SAC in Community Child Health or in General Paediatrics. Once position will be available. This position is closely linked with the positions offered at the Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children's Hospital where there is the potential for further training towards an academic/leadership career in community child health.
This year has three (3) core components:
1. Clinical : Community, Mental Health, Hospital
2. Population Health
3. Research.
This position includes an active education/learning program including Seminar Program, Sunshine Hospital Paediatric clinical meetings and Reading.
Individual and group supervision supports each fellow in attaining his/her goals for the training year, and provides a basis for evaluation and development of the training program using the framework of the Royal Australiasian College of Physicians Professional Learing Profolio.
Selection Process:
- Application through the Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children's Hospital and participation in a joint selection process along with other CCH fellow positions.
- It is essential that the FRACP examination has been passed as this is a program designed for advanced trainees in paediatrics.
- Selection is made on the application information, personal interview and information from referees. The selection panel includes the relevant program directors and the program coodinator.
