Chief Registrar - Surgery

 

Description

The General Surgery Unit is staffed by 17 visiting surgeons, a Chief Registrar, 11 college appointed and 7 hospital appointed registrars/SHMOs. Registrars rotate through General Breast and Endocrine, Upper GI, Colo-Rectal, Williamstown General and Sunshine General and Plastics. Operating theatres are sited at all three campuses of the network (Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown) and senior registrars are rotated to Goulburn Valley, Werribee Mercy and Western Private hospitals.

The department has the following position available in 2012:

Chief Surgical Registrar - 1 x  position. Suitable for a senior trainee who wants to take responsibility for direct patient care and for the supervision and development of junior colleagues. The applicant will be based in the unit relevant to their surgical interest, but will assist in the running and staffing of the whole general surgical program.

The role of the Chief Surgical Registrar is to provide leadership to the Junior Medical Staff and assists in the coordination of education and training, and the dissemination of information relating to Western Health and the RACS, in addition to his or her clinical duties. The Chief Surgical Registrar represents JMS interests by acting as a representative on committees such as the JMS Operations Management Committee, the JMS Post Graduate Medical Education Committee, Adverse Outcomes Committee and other relevant working parties. The Chief Surgical Registrar also participates in the recruitment and interviewing of interns and HMO applicants for the following year and assists in assigning appropriate rotations.
