Rotations and New Graduate Positions

Western Health offers four, 6-month rotations for grade one staff working in adult clinical areas across the continuum of care to enable staff to develop a broad suite of skills.

Twelve month new Graduate positions are offered each year in both Paediatric and Adult services.


Professional Development

The team is committed to ongoing Professional Development and both attend and contribute to a number of Special Interest Groups:

  • Dysphagia 
  • Speech Pathologists in Adult Rehabilitation 
  • Multicultural Interest Group 
  • Voice Interest Group 
  • Head & Neck Interest Group

 

Student Education and Clinical School

The Speech Pathology Department has made a significant investment in establishing a comprehensive clinical education program to support students attending clinical placements across Western Health. The Clinical Education Portfolio within Speech Pathology ensures that a high standard of student supervision is provided with continuity and consistency.

Available placement options:

Student placements are offered throughout the year, structured in predetermined blocks. Placement options include:

  • Western Hospital (acute)\
  • Williamstown Hospital (sub-acute)
  • Sunshine Hospital (paediatric, acute & sub-acute)

Adult placements may be divided into discreet acute/sub-acute sub-blocks or provide concurrent acute/sub-acute experience (Sunshine only) in a structured manner in accordance with required learning goals. This range of placement options provides flexibility for students, staff and Clinical Educator/s.

 

Recent Achievements

The Speech Pathology Department has achieved recognition among the Western Health and wider community for a range of projects and presentations including:

  • Development and Implementation of a Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) Staff Learning Program
  • Development of the 'Cultural Key Phrases' tool to assist dysphagia assessments for patients from non-English speaking backgrounds. This innovative tool was chosen to be showcased at the annual 2009 Speech Pathology Australia conference in Adelaide.
  • Development of 'Visual Menus' as a method to assist inpatients with communication, literacy, visual and cognitive difficulties to choose their meals from a pictorial menu.
  • Development and Implementation of a Clinical Education Position and Program.
  • First prize in the 2007 Western Health Excellence in Innovations Award for the paediatric group model of care program
  • High commended award in the 2008 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards for the paediatric group model of care program

Speech Pathologists are encouraged to develop their key areas of professional interest in working with multidisciplinary teams and services to facilitate a wide range of projects including the reconfiguration of the Children's Allied Health Service and the Improving Care for Older People initiative.

Philosophy

The Western Health Speech Pathology Department is committed to the provision of a high quality, innovative and holistic service that endeavours to enhance the health and social well being of our culturally and linguistically diverse community.

Partnerships within a multidisciplinary team, other agencies, the community and clients and their families/carers are highly valued in the development, delivery and evaluation of services provided.

Quality improvement activities, professional development, and the commitment of ongoing learning for others and ourselves ensure that best practice models are utilised.

The staff is empowered through the promotion of open communication and consultation, along with a sense of independence and responsibility in their own work, as a member of the Allied Health team and the larger organisation.

Team Structure

The Western Health Speech Pathology Department is divided into 3 clinical streams;

  • Paediatric Services
  • Adult Acute and Subacute Services
  • Rotations and New Graduate Positions

Each stream is led by a senior clinician with specialty skills in the area with further specialised service areas including Head and Neck and Clinical Education also offering a broad range of experiences for staff.

Paediatric Services

Paediatric Speech Pathology is a significant component of the multidisciplinary team within the Children's Allied Health Service at Sunshine Hospital.

This is primarily a community outpatient service located at the Private Consulting Rooms across from the Sunshine Hospital and is available to pre-school children with a range of communication and eating/drinking difficulties who live within the western region and who do not have access to more appropriate local services.

Inpatient services are provided to babies in the Special Care Nursery and children up to 16 years of age.

Children are seen following community or internal referral. Specific services include:

  • Preschool Multi-disciplinary Assessment Clinics
  • Neurodevelopmental Clinic and 
  • Individual or group therapy

Adult Acute and Subacute Services

Speech Pathology is viewed as an integral part of the service profile in the acute, inpatient and community rehabilitation services.

Clinicians provide timely and effective assessment and management of patients with swallowing and communication difficulties as well as providing appropriate support to carers/families and staff.

Adult Speech Pathology Services are broadly located as follows:

  • Western Hospital - acute services including specialised Head and Neck service delivery.
  • Williamstown Hospital - subacute aged care inpatients and ambulatory care services
  • Sunshine Hospital - acute, aged care inpatients, inpatient rehabilitation, sub-acute ambulatory care services
