The unit aims to support Western Health to improve responsiveness to the ethnically diverse population it services. The Unit does this by providing language and cultural services that meet the needs of patients, their families and Western Health staff.

In 2004/05 there were 23,000 interpreting occasions at Western Health.

In a typical day at Western Health there may be:

• 54 bookings for a Vietnamese interpreter and a further 65 bookings for interpreters covering more than 25 languages
• 8 telephone interpreters used to speak with patients
• 3 interpreters sent out to home visits for patients.
