Western Centre for Health Research and Education (Western CHRE)

Western Health was allocated $51.60 million for the construction of a teaching, training and research centre at Sunshine Hospital.

  • Western Health has partnered with the University of Melbourne and Victoria University to develop a new Centre for Health Research and Education.
  • The University of Melbourne will establish a new clinical school at the centre to provide undergraduate and postgraduate training of doctors in the West. This will assist in addressing a national shortage of doctors, particularly in outer metropolitan regions.
  • Victoria University will establish a centre for the education and training of nurses and allied health professionals.
  • The centre will house researchers investigating diseases that particularly affect people in the West. These include diabetes, heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.
  • The new development will be an iconic and contemporary building, incorporating a library, lecture theatre, laboratories and clinical skills facilities. The new centre will enable Western Health to provide current and future health care professionals with the very best in education and training amenities.
  • Capital costs are $51.6 million and contain the following contributions:
  • State Government - $28.6 million
  • University of Melbourne - $8 million
  • Victoria University - $8 million
  • Commonwealth Government - $7 million
  • Construction commenced in March 2009 and will be completed in 2011.
