The Western Health Division of Surgery is the largest business unit in the organisation comprising 16 separate units.

General Surgery
Description

The General Surgery units are staffed by 17 visiting surgeons, an Upper GI&HPB Surgery Fellow,  Fellow in Colo-Rectal, Endocrine and General Surgery Fellow, 13 College Appointed and 7 hospital appointed registrars/SHMOs. Registrars rotate through General Breast and Endocrine, Upper GI, Colo-Rectal, Williamstown General and Sunshine General Surgery. Operating theatres are sited at all three campuses of the network (Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown) and senior registrars are rotated to Goulburn Valley, Werribee Mercy and Western Private hospitals.

Plastic Surgery
Description

The Plastic Surgery Unit at Western Health provides plastic and reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, skin cancer management, head and neck reconstruction, microsurgery, breast reconstruction, and peripheral nerve surgery. Outpatient clinics are held for Plastic and Hand Surgery, and Hand and Wound.

Western Health provides for patients with access to weekly dressing clinics and specialist paediatric consultants. Outpatient and Dressing clinics are provided at Western General and Sunshine Hospitals with procedures being undertaken across all three campuses.

The Plastics Department is staffed by 11 VMO Plastic Surgeons and 5 registrars. The registrars include one (1) Plastic and Reconstructive Fellow, one  (1) College appointed position, one (1) advanced general surgery trainee (2 x 6 month rotations) one surgical HMO3/4 position (4 x 3 month rotations) and one (1) Unaccredited / PreSET hospital appointed 12 month position in plastic surgery.

Urology
Description
The Urology Team at Western Health is responsible for treating patients with a variety of Urological conditions involving Cancers, Stone disease, Surgical intervention and General Urological conditions across all 3 campuses.

The Urology Department is staffed by 8 VMO Urologists, a Fellow in Urology and 3 Advanced Surgical Trainee (SET 3-5 / SET 6) in Urology.

The department has the following positions available in 2012:

Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery
Description
The Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose and Throat) provides a comprehensive range of adult and padiatric ENT services across the Western Health Network. With 10 Contsultants, there is a wide range of expertise available, from head and neck cancer surgery requiring complex reconstruction, thyroid and salivary gland surgery, sinonasal surgery and complex ear surgery. Adult in-patient services are concentrated at the Footscray campus and padiatric services t Sunshine. There is also a large elective surgery caseload at the Williamstown Hospital. The Unit is staffed by Junior Medical Officers - 1 Fellow, 1 SET Otolaryngology Registrar (selected by the College) and 2 HMOs (1 Footscray and 1 Sunshine - shared with Plastic and Ophthalmology services).

Orthopaedics
Description
The Western Health Orthopaedic Unit is one of the largest orthopaedic unit with 21 senior medical staff and approximately 100 scheduled operating sessions per month. With dedicated oerating time covering elective / emergency and trauma lists, structured business and audit meeting times, the Unit is well placed to manage the 3,800 in-patients per year.  Audult Outpatient clinics are currently weekly on one campus with adult fracture clinics conducted across both Sunshine and Footscray campuses.  There are dedicated Paediatric Outpatient and Fracture Clinics held weekly at Sunshine Hospital. An emergency receiving roster operates across Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals with the Sunshine Consultants also covering Paediatrics. The Unit has a strong skill mix of junior medical staff being supported by 8 Registrars / 4 HMOs and 2 Interns rostered across all sites. The registrars comprise 3 Accredited Advanced Trainees selected by the College; and 5 Unaccredited Registrars with one rotating to Warrnambool.  The Unit is also supported by a Research Nurse / Nurse Liaison and a Secretary.

The Orthopaedic Unit has the following positions available in 2013: 

Registrars Orthopaedic Unaccredited - 5 x Positions (Suitable for Trainees awaiting an Accredited position).
